What a knee brace can and cannot do

A hinged stifle brace limits the forward sliding of the tibia that an intact cranial cruciate ligament would normally prevent. That is a mechanical function. It does not repair the ligament, and it does not stop the underlying degeneration.

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons notes that in most affected dogs the ligament has been deteriorating over months or years rather than snapping in one moment, and that partial tears almost always progress to complete tears over time. That is the single most important thing to understand before you buy anything.

Where we disagree with most of this industry: bracing is not an established equivalent to surgical stabilisation. A 2025 review of the recent literature describes the evidence base as still unsettled, and treatment recommendations vary between board-certified surgeons and primary-care vets.

Owners most commonly consider bracing when a dog is a poor anaesthetic candidate, when surgery is financially out of reach, or as part of a plan a vet is actively supervising. Those are legitimate situations. “A brace instead of surgery, decided from a website at midnight” is not.

Measure your dog before you shop

Most returned braces are returned because of measurement error, not product quality. Sizing is not standardised between manufacturers — a “medium” from one brand is a “large” from another. Take these three measurements with your dog standing and bearing weight, never lying down, and take each one twice.

  1. Thigh circumference — around the widest part of the upper thigh, above the knee. Snug against the fur, not compressing it.
  2. Knee to hock — from the middle of the kneecap down to the point of the hock (the backward-pointing joint above the paw).
  3. Lower leg circumference — around the leg just above the hock.
  4. Body weight — most brands use weight as a cross-check against the limb measurements.

If two attempts differ by more than 1cm, measure a third time. A brace that is too loose migrates down the leg and does nothing; too tight and it risks pressure sores.

Can a knee brace replace surgery for a torn cruciate ligament?

No — and any site telling you otherwise is selling to you. The evidence comparing bracing with surgical stabilisation is mixed, and the right choice depends on your dog's size, activity level, how far the ligament has degenerated, and whether the meniscus is also damaged.

How do I measure my dog for a knee brace?

Three measurements with your dog standing and weight-bearing: thigh circumference at the widest point, mid-knee to hock, and lower leg circumference just above the hock. Take each twice. Then confirm against the specific manufacturer's chart — sizing is not standardised.

How many hours a day should my dog wear it?

That is a clinical question and it depends on the injury and the plan your vet sets. Wearing schedules vary widely, and an incorrectly worn brace can cause pressure sores or muscle wastage. Ask the veterinarian or rehabilitation practitioner managing your dog's case.

Will a brace help a partial tear?

The ACVS notes that partial cranial cruciate tears almost always progress to full tears over time. Some owners use bracing within a conservative management plan, usually where a dog is a poor surgical candidate. That decision belongs with your vet, not with a product page.

My dog is old and slipping on the floor — is that a cruciate problem?

Often it is not. Hind-leg weakness in senior dogs has many causes, and slipping on hard flooring is frequently a traction problem rather than a joint-stability one. Toe grips or non-slip socks cost a fraction of a brace and may help more. If the weakness is worsening, get it examined.
